About Pre-Anaesthetic Blood Testing

Why choose pre-anaesthetic blood testing?

We offer pre-anaesthetic blood testing to all patients undergoing general anaesthesia, and strongly recommend testing for compromised or senior patients. Blood tests can detect underlying conditions or disease before other symptoms become obvious.

What does the blood test detect and why is it important?

A pre-anaesthetic blood profile is a comprehensive blood test which includes testing blood biochemistry, a complete blood cell count and electrolytes.

-The biochemistry test provides vital information about your pet’s vital organs, such as the kidneys, liver, pancreas, thyroid and intestinal tract. It can detect early changes in the function of these organs. It can also indicate conditions such as anaemia and dehydration.

-The complete blood count component gives us information about red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. These various cell types provide defense against infection, carry oxygen to the body tissues and play a major role in the blood clotting process.

- Electrolytes– in order to maintain life, the appropriate balance of electrolytes is vial. Certain diseases or conditions can result in an imbalance which could compromise your pet’s health.

What if an abnormality is detected?

Depending on the degree of abnormality or nature of the condition, your pet’s surgery may be postponed to a later date, after we have treated them for the condition. If your pet is dehydrated or slightly unwell we may alter the procedure accordingly, for example we may suggest intravenous fluid therapy to help support his/her system and thus make the anaesthetic procedure safer.
