Pet of the Month Bravery Award

About the Award

Every day at Vital Vet we meet special pets and their loving owners. This August, the Vital Vet team met a very special family with a little puppy named Eddie. After Eddie’s ordeal the team came together for a meeting. We were all inspired by Eddie’s story and especially by his owner Fiona who fought for him (read his story below). In veterinary practice we are privileged to meet many special people and their pets. We all felt that we wanted to create a way to share Eddie’s story and the stories of our other patients. Thus, we have decided to create a monthly bravery award to honour our patients and their owners.

This is little Eddie. Eddie (named by Fiona’s sons after “Edward Scissorhands”) had a very rough start to life. Fiona had only had him for a few days when she brought him to Dr. Barry for a health check. Dr. Barry was concerned about Eddie’s immune system. The breeder who Fiona purchased Eddie from had not had him vaccinated and he was very underweight. Eddie was also vomiting and did not want to eat. Fiona took him home with medication, but he was very sick and he did not respond to treatment. Dr. Barry decided to do a parvovirus test which unfortunately tested positive.

Parvovirus is a highly contagious viral disease which is fatal if not treated. Eddie was transferred to Balcatta Animal Hospital for 24hour monitoring in their isolation unit. He underwent aggressive supportive therapy to try and save his life. Eddie was on an intravenous drip in intensive care for over a week and had to have numerous blood transfusions. Luckily for Eddie and his family he was a fighter and he survived!

Eddie is now happily at home with his family. He is making an excellent recovery and is slowly putting on weight. Now that he has fully recovered from his ordeal he has had his vaccinations and can join puppy preschool and go for walks. His owner, Fiona is working with the RSPCA to try and bring Eddie’s breeder to justice. She is also fighting to change legislation in Western Australia to ensure better regulation of the pet shop trade. For more information about her cause please visit : www.pawsforlaws.blogspot.com

To protect your dog from parvovirus it is essential to get them vaccinated annually.

“Diddle” is a very special cat who had to have emergency surgery when she was injured by a car. She had severe injuries from the accident and had to have reconstructive surgery. She was in intensive care in our hospital for over a week and is still on the road to recovery. She was too weak to eat and so Dr. Barry had to place a stomach tube so that we could feed her while she regained her strength. “Diddle” is an excellent patient and despite her ordeal she always greeted us with purrs and she loves cuddles! Her lovely owners supported her throughout her recovery and “Diddle” is now safely at home and doing well.
